Barclays Appoints Anita Tanna as Its First Chief AI Officer

Barclays has appointed Anita Tanna as its first chief AI officer, a landmark move that signals how seriously the centuries-old bank is taking artificial intelligence as it races to keep pace with tech-native competitors reshaping finance. The hire underscores a fundamental shift in how traditional financial institutions now view AI—no longer as a peripheral technology but as a strategic imperative that demands C-suite leadership. For an institution that weathered the 2008 financial crisis and multiple regulatory overhauls, the creation of this role suggests Barclays believes AI poses both an existential competitive threat and an opportunity too large to delegate.
